Abstract
It is still controversial about the normal value of blood glucose in newborn infants. In 50 randomly selected normal newborn babies born in cbstetric department of N.M.C. from May to Septcrnber, 1975, blond glucose levels were measured. l ¢¥our determinations were made on each caby at 3, 12, 24 and 48 hours after birth. Blood glucose levels were measured by OToluie¢¥:ne micromethod and samples were taken by skin puncture on the heel of the infants.
The following results were obtained.
1. The mean blood sugar level in 28 cases of male infant is 63.854:12.56mg% and that of female is 65.91I3.42:ng.06.
The difference is not statistically significant. There is also no significant difference in blood sugar levels of serial samples between male and tamale infants
2. The mean blood sugar level of infants with birth weight under3.2kg is 61.81¡¾13.18mg% and over 3. 2kg is 66.01¡¾10.65mg%.
3. There shows fluctuations in the serial detcrminanons of blood sugar levels with temporary fall at 24 hours. The biood sugar level seem to be related to the fasting period as well as other factors.
4. Though the number of cases is not satisfied, low blood sugar level is noted ineb, bies delivered by C-section compared with other methods of delivery.
